Elvira Reyes, a Seminole Heights resident, recently discovered a new way to travel the UC when she redeemed the free flying lesson she won from our March issue’s New Heights Do UC Contest.

“I thought it was a contest to fly around in an airplane; I didn’t realize it was to fly the plane,” Elvira said as she remembered being told the details of her prize. “But when was I ever going to get another chance to fly a plane?”

The flight was scheduled at Davis Islands’ Peter O. Knight Airport (825 Severn Ave.). Soon after Elvira arrived, Kristy Bolingbroke, one of Atlas Aviation’s pilots, took Elvira through step-by-step instructions on pre-flight preparations of the plane they would be using. After about 15 minutes, both ladies sat side-by-side in the Cesna 172 and Elvira took over the controls as the plane sat on the runway.

After a little more instruction from Kristy, Elvira throttled-up the plane’s engines and accelerated down the runway. Once she pulled back on the wheel in hand, the co-pilots took off to the wide blue yonder.

“That was amazing! I got to take off,” remembered Elvira.

After about 40 minutes in flight, Kristy took full control of the plane and brought it in for a landing.
When asked about the flight, Elvira said, “I suggest that anyone who can should try it. The experience will always be imbedded in my mind.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in our last issue's Do UC Contest, which asked, "Other than car, how do you commute around the UC?" The drawing winner, for a FREE dinner for two at Bungalow Bistro of Seminole Heights, was Hyde Park’s Daryl Croi.

Congratulations Daryl!
